一首「青春為何物What is a Youth」，不但是作曲家Nino Rota替全片量身打造的主旋律，其中的精華歌詞，更將少男女少的戀情做了最佳註解，更預告了他們戀情難久長的悲情宿命...
電影就成功關鍵之一就是選角，拍攝電影之前，齊費里尼帶著李奧納．懷汀與奧莉薇亞．荷西住進一間別墅裡，除了排戲唸詞，就是玩耍，讓年輕人之間自然培養出默契好感，心頭來電，眼神就有波動，就能撼動人心了。
另外一半的成功關鍵在於創造他們愛情的能量。羅密歐與茱麗葉在面具舞會上一見鍾情，就在兩人凝眸對望的同時，茱麗葉家的賓客們正在狂歡起舞，飛揚的音樂旋律勾動起喜悅激情，心在跳，情在飛，在生理與心理的化學效應交錯下，火苗已然一發不可收拾。
但是，柴菲瑞利卻要大家暫時冷靜一下，他安排了一位伶童出來唱歌，那一首「青春為何物 (What is a Youth)」讓這首歌貫穿整個故事內容與結局，歌詞如下：
A rose will bloom 玫瑰盛開，
It then will fade 很快就會淍零；
So does a youth 青春如此，
So does the fairest maid 美麗的少女也是如此...
他們的青春很快就會凋零，一如玫瑰，就在愛情最飽滿酣暢的時刻，作曲家Nino Rota已然用歌詞點出了他們的宿命，最甜美與最感傷的矛盾元素，就在此際揉合出最淒美的詠歎調，為日後的無奈命運，鋪排下黯然神傷的警世預言。
就在眾人聆聽著這首哀傷情歌的同時，茱麗葉正努力撥開人群，尋找她的白馬王子，齊費里尼深諳情人尋尋覓覓的急切之情，當茱麗葉的手被羅密歐猛然握住時，就帶出了接下來的「以唇代手」經典對白：

就在茱麗葉閉上眼睛，享受這「罪惡之吻」時，伶童的歌聲也唱到了最高潮，「青春如此，美麗的少女亦然如此」，搭配得混然天成。
